Rheumatoid arthritis (RA), one of the most common autoimmune disorders, is an inflammatory disease that affects the joints, causing pain, swelling, and eventually loss of function. As the disease progresses, the bones inside the joints start eroding, which can cause damage to the bone, cartilage, tendons, and ligaments. RA may also affect a patient's eyes, lungs, and heart.
Biologic disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs are increasingly being used to treat RA because of their superiority to standard therapies in delaying or preventing the deformity and disability associated with this condition.
Private payers and Medicare are the most common payer types for patients with RA. However, both give rise to access issues for many patients. The cost sharing requirements for patients with Medicare or certain types of private payer coverage can be significant and often include high co-payments and deductibles. As a result, low to moderate income beneficiaries are often unable to afford the prescribed therapies. The Patient Access Network Foundation may be able to provide these patients assistance with their cost sharing requirements.
