Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic, unpredictable disease of
the central nervous system. It is thought to be an autoimmune
disorder, meaning that the immune system incorrectly attacks the
person's healthy tissue. Symptoms result when an inflammatory immune
system attack affects myelin, the protective insulation surrounding
nerve fibers of the central nervous system.
Biologic therapies are currently used to treat patients with
multiple sclerosis. These drug therapies are intended to reduce the
frequency and severity of acute exacerbations and slow the
accumulation and progression of disability over time.
Private insurance and Medicare are the most common type of health
coverage for patients with MS. Both can lead to access issues for
many patients. As a result, low-to-moderate income beneficiaries are
often unable to afford the out-of-pocket costs associated with their
treatment.
